Brazil's history begins with the indigenous population around 28,000 BC. Later, large states such as the empires of the Aztecs, Incas and Mayans existed in Central and South America.
In 1492, Christopher Columbus' discovery of the Americas threatened these advanced civilisations. The number of Native Americans fell sharply. In 1494, the Treaty of Tordesillas assigned Brazil
to the Portuguese sphere of influence. Brazil was first mentioned in 1507.
In 1888, before the Republic was established in 1889, Brazil was the last country in the world to outlaw slavery.
This long history continues to influence Brazilian culture and life to this day. The mixing of the indigenous population with African slaves and European conquerors has shaped the country. Every biography and every story forms Brazil into what we see today.
